Título: SALIVARY VIRAL DETECTION IN HOOKAH AND CIGARETTE USERS

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the presence and viral load of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Human Herpesviruses (HHV), and Torque Teno Virus (TTV) in the saliva of hookah users, cigarette smokers, and non-smokers.
Study design: This was a cross-sectional observational study including young adults (29 non-smokers, 24 cigarette smokers, and 33 hookah users). Viral detection and quantification were performed by qPCR using unstimulated whole saliva samples, targeting 28 HPV types, HHV-1 to HHV-8, and TTV. Statistical analyses included Chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Kruskal-Wallis tests (p ≤ 0.05).
Results: TTV was the most prevalent virus across all groups, with no significant differences. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) showed significantly higher positivity in the hookah group compared to the control group (p = 0.05). The viral load of HHV-7 was significantly lower in cigarette smokers (p < 0.001). HSV-1 was detected more frequently in the control group than in cigarette smokers (p = 0.05). All participants tested negative for HPV, HSV-2, VZV, and HHV-8.
Conclusion: Hookah use is associated with increased exposure to EBV, possibly due to device sharing. Cigarette smoking demonstrated a selective effect on reducing HHV-7 viral load and HSV-1 detection, suggesting distinct impacts of smoking habits on the oral virome.
