Resumo: Degenerative changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in systemic sclerosis (SS) may result from tissue stiffness and vascular ischemia. This study evaluated cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of nine female patients (mean age 52.4 years) diagnosed with SS to identify TMJ bone manifestations. Imaging analysis revealed that all patients exhibited at least one degenerative alteration. Predominant findings included flattening of the articular eminence, cortical erosions, reduced joint space, subchondral cysts, bone sclerosis, and osteophytes. Notably, some cases showed subtle hyperdensity in the region where the articular disc normally lies, suggesting density variations of undetermined significance. Joint hypomobility was also observed in open-mouth acquisitions. These findings are crucial for clinical management, allowing professionals to distinguish whether functional limitation and pain stem from joint pathology or fibrosis of perioral tissues. Imaging diagnosis is essential for appropriate therapeutic guidance and for monitoring disease progression in patients with systemic sclerosis. Financial support: CAPES.
