Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the effects of an extraoral LED-based photobiomodulation (PBM) device (mask) in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis (OM) in children and adolescents with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) treated with high-dose methotrexate (MTX). Methodology: This was a clinical study involving 30 participants aged 5 to 18 years with ALL treated with MTX, who received photobiomodulation (PBM) with an extraoral LED mask. The normality of numerical variables was verified using the Shapiro-Wilk test. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the hospitalization time between groups (with vs. without OM). Results: Thirty patients were included, with a mean age of 8.93 years. Regarding the incidence of oral mucositis (OM), 4 (13.3%) patients presented with grade I OM only (no higher grades reported). The average length of hospital stay was 5 days for patients without OM and 9 days for those who developed the condition. Conclusion: A low incidence and severity of OM were observed. The increase in hospital stay time in patients who developed OM was not statistically significant, indicating good clinical control. Thus, extraoral PBM with an LED mask presents itself as a promising alternative being low-cost for the prevention and management of OM in this population.
