Resumo:
Objective: To assess oral cancer-related knowledge and preventive practices among dentists and dental students, focusing on epidemiological awareness, smoking, and counseling on oral self-examination.

Study design: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted with 750 participants in Goiânia, Brazil, including 283 dental students from University A, 427 from University B, and 40 practicing dentists. Data were collected through a structured self-administered questionnaire addressing oral cancer epidemiology, smoking, counseling on oral self-examination, and preventive practices. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using the chi-square test, with a significance level of 5%.

Results: Students from University A showed significantly greater recognition of the higher prevalence of oral cancer in men than those from University B (84.3% vs. 54.8%; p<0.000001). No significant difference was found between universities regarding counseling on oral self-examination (70.5% vs. 65.8%; p=0.51). Smoking prevalence was significantly lower among dentists than among students (3.0% vs. 16.4% and 28.8%; p=0.017).

Conclusion: Important gaps remain in oral cancer knowledge and preventive practices, especially among undergraduate students. These findings support strengthening Oral Medicine teaching and continuing education initiatives to improve early detection and control of modifiable risk factors.
