Título: ULTRASOUND CHARACTERIZATION OF TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT INVOLVEMENT IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Categoria do Trabalho: Pôster - Investigação Original (IO)

Área Temática: Imaginologia dentomaxilofacial

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and to characterize temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement in 136 individuals with clinically and serologically confirmed rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disease in which TMJ involvement remains underrecognized and is not captured by standard disease activity indices such as DAS28.
Study design: This study was designed as a cross-sectional study. TMD diagnosis was established using validated DC/TMD criteria, including arthralgia, mandibular dysfunction, and joint sounds. High-frequency ultrasound was performed to assess the morphological and vascular characteristics of the TMJ, alongside variables such as sex, age, and body mass index (BMI).
Results: The results showed a TMD prevalence of 36.76% among individuals with RA, with a significant association between TMD, arthralgia, and extremes of BMI. Ultrasound findings included joint deformities and increased vascularization.
Conclusion: Ultrasound has shown potential in contributing to the diagnosis of TMJ changes which, together with DC/TMD criteria, can help identify individuals with TMD among RA patients, supporting clinical management, therapeutic decision-making, and monitoring, ultimately improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
