Resumo: Objective: This study aims to answer the question: what are the oral and dental manifestations of patients diagnosed with muscular dystrophies? Study design: Prisma Checklist guidelines was followed and JBI Institute checklists for risk of bias were used (prevalence and cross-sectional studies). Electronic searches on five databases and grey literature were performed up to April 2024 and identified 4413 studies. After applying the elegibility criteria, reading the texts in full, 17 studies remained. Results: The total sample was 882 participants, aging between 3 and 64 years old, the majority were male. Three types of muscular dystrophies were described: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Myotonic dystrophy, and Facioscapulohumeral dystrophy. A quantitative synthesis was performed only for DMD and 3 features: open bite, macroglossia and posterior crossbite. The pooled prevalence of open bite was approximately 38% (95% CI: 29-47%). The pooled prevalence of macroglossia was approximately 40% (95% CI: 21-62%). The pooled prevalence of posterior crossbite was approximately 57% (95% CI: 41-72%). Conclusion: Quantitative synthesis was only feasible for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, demonstrating a high prevalence of open bite, macroglossia, and posterior crossbite. However, given that most included studies presented moderate to high risk of bias, these findings should be interpreted with caution.
