Categoria do Trabalho: Pôster - Investigação Original (IO)

Área Temática: Oncologia

Resumo: Objective:
To evaluate the impact of an integrated and preventive oral support protocol with photobiomodulation therapy on treatment tolerance, oral toxicity, and nutritional status in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy.
Study design:
Observational analytical study including 20 patients with tumors of the oral cavity and oropharynx treated with radiotherapy, with or without chemotherapy and/or surgery. Variables analyzed included rapid oral preparation, use of photobiomodulation therapy, oral mucositis, weight loss, type of feeding, and treatment continuity.
Results:
Notably, no treatment interruptions were observed. Severe toxicity was limited to a single patient (5%) who developed grade 4 mucositis (WHO) and required hospitalization due to aspiration pneumonia after completion of radiotherapy. No patient experienced severe weight loss (>15%), with most showing only mild weight reduction. Higher mucositis severity was observed in patients undergoing surgery followed by adjuvant therapy. Importantly, patients without prior oral preparation and receiving only therapeutic photobiomodulation showed worse outcomes compared to those managed with preventive oral care and combined preventive and therapeutic photobiomodulation.
Conclusion:
Early, preventive, and efficient oral support with photobiomodulation should be considered a key component of coordinated multidisciplinary care to reduce toxicity and ensure uninterrupted oncologic treatment without delays.
