Resumo: Objective:
To evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics, treatment modalities, and outcomes of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), emphasizing the impact of delayed diagnosis.
Study Design:
This retrospective observational study included 100 patients diagnosed with HNSCC. Demographic data, tumor location, TNM staging, treatment strategies, and clinical outcomes were descriptively analyzed.
Results:
The mean age was 65.9 years (SD = 11.6). The most frequent tumor sites were the oropharynx (30%), tongue (25%), and larynx (20%). Advanced-stage disease predominated, with T3-T4 tumors accounting for approximately 70-75% of cases and regional lymph node involvement observed in 60-65%. Combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy were the most common treatment modalities (55%), followed by trimodal therapy (18%). At the time of analysis, 40-45% of patients were under follow-up, 10-15% remained in active treatment, and the mortality rate was approximately 20-25%.
Conclusion:
Delayed diagnosis remains a critical issue in HNSCC, with most patients presenting at advanced stages and requiring multimodal treatment. These findings highlight the need for improved early detection strategies and reinforce the importance of multidisciplinary care to improve outcomes.
