Resumo: Objective: To characterize the consultation requests (CRs) directed to the Hospital Dentistry service of a tertiary institution, aiming to support care planning and management. Study Design: This observational study analyzed CRs submitted between February 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, requesting departments, underlying conditions, and reasons for referral were evaluated. Results: A total of 3,093 CRs corresponding to 2,544 individual patients were reviewed. Most requests originated from medical teams, particularly oncology and internal medicine for adults, and pediatrics for children. Among adults, the predominant underlying conditions included malignant solid tumors and cardiovascular diseases; neurological disorders were most frequent in pediatric patients. The primary reasons for CRs were oral conditioning prior to bisphosphonate therapy and preoperative dental evaluation in adults, while dental developmental abnormalities were the leading cause among children. Overall, the findings reflect a high demand for dental assessment in medically complex patients and highlight significant differences in referral patterns across age groups. Conclusion: Characterizing CRs revealed a consistently high demand for dental evaluation and confirmed the substantial clinical complexity of referred patients. These findings emphasize the importance of structured referral processes and optimized care pathways to meet hospital dental needs effectively and ensure resource allocation.
