Resumo: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) operate by vaporizing e-liquids, a process that can potentially alter the oral microbiome, biochemical salivary properties and local immune responses. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV/HHV-4) is known to establish lifelong latent infections within the host and is intermittently shed in saliva, a process often influenced by environmental stressors and oral health status. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate whether e-cig use modulates the salivary shedding patterns of EBV. Study Design: Unstimulated saliva samples were collected from a cohort of e-cig users (n=25) and a control group of non-users (n=25). Viral DNA was extracted and analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to determine both prevalence and viral load. Results: EBV positivity was 44% in the e-cig group and 62.5% in the control group (p=0.195). Furthermore, no statistically significant differences in viral load ranks were observed between the two groups. Conclusion: Despite the documented impact of e-liquids on the oral microenvironment, these findings suggest that e-cig use does not significantly modulate the shedding patterns of EBV. This study provides valuable baseline data for understanding EBV interactions in the context of emerging smoking technologies.
