Resumo: Objective: To analyse the epidemiological and clinicopathological characteristics, as well as the long-term prognosis, of salivary gland cancers diagnosed in the Basque Country between 1986 and 2019.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted using the data of the Basque Cancer Registry. A total of 986 cases of salivary gland cancer with a minimum follow-up of 5 years were analysed, evaluating epidemiological, clinicopathological and prognostic variables.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 63.25 years, with male predominance (56.3%). The most frequent tumour location was the parotid gland (63.2%), followed by oral cavity (20.3%). Most intraoral tumours were located in the hard palate (32.0%). Histologically, mucoepidermoid carcinoma (18.3%) and adenoid cystic carcinoma (15%) were the most common neoplasms. At the time of diagnosis, 55.8% of the cases were localized. The main therapeutic management was surgery (exclusive in 37.5%; combined with radiotherapy in 36.2%). The 5-year overall-survival was 57.6%, while the disease-specific survival was 79.5%.
Conclusions: Young patients, women, and localized tumours showed a better prognosis; conversely, advanced age and regional or disseminated extension significantly worsen survival. These results highlight the need to develop specific protocols for the early diagnosis of salivary neoplasms in our environment.
