Resumo: Objective: To assess educational attainment and identify factors associated with age-related educational disparity in individuals with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (NSCLP).
Study Design: This cross-sectional study included 509 individuals with NSCLP treated at two centers affiliated with the Brazilian Oral Cleft Group: the Care Center of Professor Edson Antônio Velano University and the University of Cuiabá. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire. Social (gender, age), clinical (cleft type, comorbidities), and educational (educational level) variables were analyzed.
Results: Males comprised 53.4% of the sample. Participants aged ≥15 years represented the largest group (36.9%). Cleft lip and palate was the most prevalent type (57.8%), and 60.2% had at least one comorbidity. More than half (51.6%) were in lower elementary education, and 44.3% had age-inadequate educational attainment. Educational inadequacy was strongly associated with age, with higher prevalence among adolescents aged 11-14 years (PR=8.25; 95% CI: 4.67-14.58; p<0.001) and individuals ≥15 years (PR=7.28; 95% CI: 4.13-12.83; p<0.001), compared with those aged 5-10 years. Comorbidities (p=0.057) and cleft type (p=0.052) were not significantly associated with the outcome.
Conclusion: Educational inadequacy is highly prevalent in individuals with NSCLP and increases with age, underscoring the need for policies promoting educational inclusion and reducing age-grade distortion.
