Título: Glycogenic acanthosis affecting the gingiva: case report and literature review

Resumo: Glycogenic acanthosis (GA) was initially reported in 1970 as areas of mucosal thickening, generally observed in the lower esophagus, microscopically characterized by epithelial hyperplasia with accumulation of intracytoplasmic glycogen. To date, about 19 well-documented cases of oral GA have been reported, none of which involved the gingiva. This study appears to show the first case of intraoral GA affecting the gingiva. A 59-year-old female who was referred for evaluation of a "white lesion" on the mandibular gingiva. The patients medical history was not contributory, denying alcohol or tobacco consumption, with no signs suggesting Cowden syndrome or gastroesophageal reflux disease. Microscopical analysis showed a hyperplastic surface epithelium exhibiting acanthosis and the presence of clear cells in the spinous layer compatible with intracytoplasmic glycogen accumulation. The PAS stain, with and without diastase digestion, was consistent with abundant intracytoplasmic glycogen deposits. Therefore, the diagnosis of GA was made
