Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of neoplastic lesions in pediatric patients from a reference oral pathology laboratory.
Study Design: Histopathological reports of patients aged 0 to 12 years, covering the period from 1998 to 2024, were selected. Clinicodemographic data, such as age, sex, lesion site, and clinical signs, were collected from referral forms. Lesions were classified as benign neoplasms (lymphangioma, hemangioma, fibroma, osteoma, among others), odontogenic neoplasms, and malignant neoplasms.
Results: A total of 614 histopathological reports from children were evaluated, representing 6.79% of all reports issued during the study period. Neoplastic lesions accounted for 106 cases (17.26%), with 53 occurring in males and 53 in females. The mean age was 8.07 ± 3.27 years. Benign neoplasms were the most prevalent (n = 61), followed by benign odontogenic tumors (n = 39). Malignant neoplasms accounted for 1% (n = 6) of the diagnoses. The most frequently observed lesions were papilloma and odontoma (n = 24 each), followed by hemangioma (n = 10) and verruca vulgaris (n = 9).
Conclusion: Neoplastic lesions in pediatric patients represented a relevant proportion of histopathological diagnoses in this age group, with a predominance of benign neoplasms and benign odontogenic tumors, while malignant neoplasms were rare.
