Resumo: The gubernacular cord, located within the gubernacular canal, link the tooth follicle to the overlying gingival and it can be identified in the alveolar region of the lingual/palatal surface of deciduous teeth. Some authors believe that the gubernacular canal and cord have a role in the function of guiding the tooth eruption, while others claimed that these structures can influence on odontogenic tumor development. Here, we present a case affecting an 11-year-old female patient who during a routine panoramic radiography examination visualized a well-defined radiolucency around the crown of an impacted mandibular canine. Interestingly, a gubernacular canal was found to extend into the radiolucency. After surgical approach, macroscopy evidenced a gubernacular cord and pericoronal follicle. Microscopy of the gubernacular cord showed connective fibrous tissue containing odontogenic epithelial rests. The current case shows a detailed clinicopathological documentation of the gubernaculum dentis, with macroscopic examination of the same being rarely reported.
