Título: ORAL HEALTH CONDITIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS IN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT PATIENTS: A RETROSPECTIVE STUDY

Resumo: Objective: To investigate the association between oral health status and clinical outcomes in intensive care unit (ICU) patients using the Oral Assessment Guide (OAG).
Study design: Retrospective cohort study with 3,145 admissions (2,445 unique patients) from September 2022 to December 2025. Oral conditions were assessed at admission and discharge using the modified OAG (scores 4 - 12). Clinical and demographic data were obtained from electronic records. Statistical analysis included non-parametric and categorical tests, with significance set at p < 0.05.
Results: Patients were predominantly elderly (mean 75.8 ± 12.4 years) and male (54.2%). Most presented satisfactory or mild oral impairment at admission, with slight improvement during hospitalization. Higher OAG scores were observed in patients requiring mechanical ventilation (5.66 ± 1.46 vs. 4.72 ± 1.04) and in non-survivors (5.52 ± 1.44 vs. 4.80 ± 1.12), both associated with longer ICU stays. Overall mortality was 9.4%.
Conclusion: Poorer oral health at ICU admission was associated with worse clinical outcomes, including increased need for mechanical ventilation, longer hospitalization, and higher mortality. The OAG is a useful tool for oral monitoring in critically ill patients and supports the integration of dental professionals into ICU care.
