Resumo: Ameloblastoma is a benign epithelial odontogenic neoplasm, accounting for about 1% of all head and neck tumours. Few studies have documented the presence of mucous cells in ameloblastomas, suggesting that the pluripotency of odontogenic epithelium may lead to mucous metaplasia or differentiation. This study aimed to identify the presence of mucous cells in ameloblastomas using a mucicarmine stain and to assess the frequency of mucous cells in each histopathological subtype of ameloblastoma. From the authors archives, 97 cases of ameloblastoma were selected from January 2015 to December 2024. Of these, 45 (46.4%) were female and 52 (53.6%) male. The age range was 8-72 years, with 93 from the African population. The conventional follicular subtype 32 (32.9%) and acanthomatous 15 (15.5%) were the most common subtypes. Mucous cells were identified in 47 (48.5%) cases. Of these, 12 (25.5%) were acanthomatous subtype, 2 (4.3%) basal cell subtype, 12 (25.5%) follicular subtype, 4 (8.5%) granular cell subtype, 11 (23.4%) plexiform subtype, 1 (2.1%) unicystic subtype II and 5 (10.6%) which could not be classified. These findings confirm that the presence of mucous cells in ameloblastoma is common, predominantly in the follicular subtype, which exhibits acanthomatous change.
