Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the reliability and quality of information from videos published on YouTube and TikTok as a research source on salivary gland carcinomas.
Study design: This study systematically assessed the content, reliability, and quality of 100 first Portugues-language YouTube and TikTok videos on SGC. DISCERN and Global Quality Scale (GQS) were used to assess the reliability and quality, respectively.
Results: After applying the exclusion criteria, a total of 34 videos were analyzed, including 20 from YouTube and 14 from TikTok. Video length was significantly greater on YouTube compared with TikTok (p<0.0001). A recent growth of content related to SGC was seen on TikTok in comparison with YouTube (p: 0,0003). YouTube videos presented higher informational quality scores than TikTok videos (p = 0.0247). No significant correlations were observed between quality scores and engagement metrics. In addition, no significant difference was seen between the platforms when the reliability was investigated.
Conclusion: Despite the growing availability of content, especially on TikTok, both platforms present limitations as reliable sources of information on SGC, reinforcing the need for critical appraisal and greater involvement of healthcare professionals in producing high-quality educational content.
