Título: STYLOID PROCESS CALCIFICATION IN CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE: RADIOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE FROM A MULTICENTER CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Resumo: Objectives: Extra-skeletal calcifications are a hallmark of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) and are associated with increased cardiovascular and cerebrovascular risk. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and patterns of stylohyoid ligament calcification (styloid process elongation) in CKD patients and to evaluate associations with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, panoramic radiographs from CKD patients (stages 3-5) and age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated using Langlais' criteria. Clinical and biochemical characteristics were assessed, and associations examined using multivariable analyses adjusted for age and sex. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CAAE 65758022.5.0000.0068; CAAE 65758022.5.3001.0075). Results: Styloid process elongation was more prevalent in CKD patients than controls (67.0% vs. 43.0%, p<0.001). Median styloid length was greater in the CKD group (39.0 mm), compared with controls, and partial calcification predominated. Advanced disease stages showed a trend toward higher prevalence of elongation and calcification. No independent associations were observed with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events or mortality; age was the only independent predictor of cardiovascular outcomes.
Conclusions: CKD patients show higher prevalence and distinct patterns of styloid process calcification, likely reflecting CKD-MBD. Longitudinal studies are warranted.
