Resumo: Objective: Early initiation of sexual activity and the practice of unprotected oral sex increase exposure to high-risk HPV genotypes. Here, we investigated the risky sexual behavior (RB) associated with perceived barriers and misconceptions related to HPV vaccination (HPV-v). Study design: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 254 dentistry students. We used a questionnaire based on Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) and Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) to assess RB, and a questionnaire for knowledge about the HPV-v. Data were collected electronically and analyzed using chi-square and Fishers exact tests. Results: Most participants did not believe HPV-v encourages earlier sexual activity. The recognition of the need for continued oral health follow-up was more prevalent in RB group. In addition, students with RB were significantly more likely to acknowledge the continued necessity of condom use after vaccination (p: 0.043) and recognize that unprotected oral sex increases the risk of oropharyngeal HPV infection (p: 0.0207). Conclusion: Although students demonstrated adequate knowledge about HPV-related risks, this does not necessarily translate into safer behaviors, highlighting the need for educational strategies that go beyond knowledge and focus on shaping attitudes and promoting preventive practices.
