Resumo: Objective: The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has increased significantly among young adults, especially in undergraduate students, driven by the belief that these devices are less harmful to health. Here, we evaluated the prevalence of conventional cigarette (CC) and e-cigarette use among undergraduate students and investigated its relationship with users self-perceived oral health. Study design: A cross-sectional study with 228 dental students. Data were collected using an electronic questionnaire. The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) - Alternative Tobacco Products Module was used to assess the prevalence of e-cigarette use. The OHIP-14, the Xerostomia Inventory - XI, and the visual analog scale (VAS) were used to investigate self-perceived oral symptoms. Results: The prevalence of CC smoking was 14.22%, while e-cigarette use reached 29.39%. No significant differences were observed between CC and e-cigarette users regarding self-perceived oral symptoms. However, important gaps in tobacco control measures were identified where only 52.54% of participants were asked about smoking during healthcare visits (p = 0.6961), and just 11.86% received cessation advice (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, most counseling was not provided within public health services (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: These results indicated an insufficient integration of tobacco use screening and intervention, particularly for e-cigarette users.
