Resumo: Objective: The National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) recently recognized HPV vaccination (HPV-vac) as a preventive approach for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Here, we investigated the association between health literacy (HL) and knowledge about HPV-vac. Study design: A cross-sectional study was conducted with dental students (n=254). The Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ-Br) and a questionnaire for knowledge about the HPV vaccine on the Brazilian population were used. Data were collected through an adapted electronic questionnaire and analyzed using chi-square and Fishers exact tests (p<0.05). Results: The mean age of participants was 23.3 years, with a predominance of women, white individuals, and those are with middle/high income (p<0.0001). Most participants demonstrated excellent or adequate HL (82.7%; p<0.0001). Students with higher levels of HL were more likely to recognized that the HPV-vac is provided by the government (p=0.0006) and notably its role in reducing the risk of HPV associated oral lesions (p=0.0094). In addition, we showed that the HL does not impact the knowledge about the prevention of OPSCC. Conclusion: Continuous updates in dental curricula are needed, emphasizing HPV-related education and strengthening preventive approaches to OPSCC, to better prepare future professionals for their role in health promotion and early detection.
