Resumo: This study aimed to characterize retracted articles in Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine through a bibliometric analysis of publication patterns, retraction reasons and citations. A comprehensive search using topic-related keywords across seven databases and Retraction Watch was conducted in April 2025. Article selection was performed independently by two blinded reviewers, with disagreements resolved by a third evaluator. Retraction reasons were obtained from official notices and categorized into ethical misconduct, inadequate reporting, editorial or peer review failures, and other causes. A total of 162 retracted articles were analyzed, including bibliographic data, quartile, retraction circumstances, citations, and retraction lag, using descriptive and inferential statistical tests. Most retractions originated from Asia, particularly China (51.9%) and India (16.7%), with higher frequencies in Q2 and Q3 journals. Journals initiated most retractions (86.8%). Ethical misconduct and inadequate reporting accounted for 84.8% of cases, mainly involving plagiarism or duplication (23.3%) and image or data manipulation (19.2%). Retraction patterns varied significantly over time and by journal quartile. The mean retraction lag was 2.9 years, longer in higher-impact journals. Although citations declined significantly after retraction, articles continued to be cited. These findings highlight persistent weaknesses in research and editorial practices, reinforcing the need for improved detection and prevention strategies.
