Resumo: Introduction: Mineral and bone disorder (MBD) is a complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This condition may manifest through changes in bone mineral density as well as the presence of extra-skeletal calcifications (ESC).
Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of imaging findings suggestive of MBD in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of individuals with CKD.
Study Design: This is a prospective study involving the analysis of CBCT scans from patients with CKD. The images were evaluated by two previously trained and calibrated examiners, with a third examiner consulted in cases of disagreement.
Results: A total of 37 CBCT scans from patients with CKD were analyzed, with a mean age of 48 years; most patients were male (n=21; 56.7%). Thirty patients were in stage 5 CKD (81.1%). Monckeberg calcifications were observed in 23 patients (62.1%) and bone alterations in 12 patients (32.4%). Overall, 27 patients (72.9%) presented at least one imaging finding compatible with MBD. Carotid calcifications were also found in 24 patients (64.8%).
Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate a higher prevalence of imaging suggestive of soft tissue lesions than of bone alterations resulting from MBD in patients with CKD.
