Resumo: Xeroderma pigmentosum is a rare condition inherited as an autosomal recessive trait, in which epithelial cells are unable to repair damage caused by UV radiation. Due to its malignant nature, affected patients have a high likelihood of developing many forms of skin cancer throughout their lifetime. The patient in question is a child who sought care at the CEO (Dental Specialties Center). After the pediatric dentist identified the abnormal appearance of the skin and the presence of cutaneous lesions, the patient was referred to a dermatologist. The diagnosis is commonly clinical (based on the lesions and the presence of photophobia); however, in this case, genetic counseling was also performed, revealing that the child was the result of a consanguineous relationship, as occurs in most cases of the disease. Although the patient declined treatment, management is typically preventive (avoiding exposure to UV radiation) and oncological (using chemotherapeutic agents to treat neoplasms).
