Resumo: The objective of this study was to compare the number of Bell's palsy (BP) cases notified in Brazil across the pre-pandemic (January 2018 to February 2020), pandemic (March 2020 to April 2023), and post-pandemic (May 2023 to December 2024) periods. This is an ecological study using national databases from DATASUS (Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System) and SISAB (Primary Health Care Information System). The study outcome was the number of notified cases of Bell's palsy nationwide. Since the study used public-domain data, it was exempt from IRB approval. A total of 1.398.354 cases were registered. The reported cases experienced an abrupt drop at the onset of the pandemic, followed by moderate fluctuations throughout the same year. The highest BP peaks occurred after the pandemic, with a decline at the end of 2023. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicates a statistically significant difference in the number of case counts across periods (all comparisons, p < 0.05), with the post-pandemic period standing out with a higher median and mean than the others. In conclusion, BP case notifications increased in the post-pandemic period. Although these findings suggest a temporal association, further analytical studies are necessary to investigate potential links with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
