Título: RADIOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF PLASMABLASTIC LYMPHOMA AND MULTIPLE MYELOMA/PLASMACYTOMA IN THE JAWS: A COMPARATIVE APPROACH

Resumo: Objective: To comparatively investigate the radiographic features of plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) and multiple myeloma/plasmacytoma of the jaws. Study design: Sixty-seven panoramic radiographs of patients affected by PBL (27 cases) and multiple myeloma/plasmacytoma (40 cases) were retrospectively retrieved from the files of different institutions. The original diagnoses were confirmed and the panoramic radiographs were standardized for descriptive evaluation by three experts. Clinical data were obtained from the patients' medical files. Results: Most of PBL lesions on panoramic radiographs were osteolytic (96.3%), unilocular (40.7%) with poorly defined borders (100%), while multiple myeloma/plasmacytoma cases presented well-defined borders (25%) and multilocular aspect (67.5%). Although the punched-out aspect is characteristic of multiple myeloma/plasmacytoma (23 of 40 cases), it was also observed in four PBL cases. Fifteen of the 27 cases (55.6%) of PBL had floating teeth, while the osteoporotic-like appearance with cortical thinning and disappearance of mandibular canal walls were more common among multiple myeloma/plasmacytoma patients. Conclusion: Although these entities share clinical and radiographic characteristics, there are specific findings that may assist in their differentiation, such as the punched-out pattern and floating teeth appearance.
