Resumo: Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the systemic levels of L-DOPA and dopamine in patients with oral leukoplakia and their association with anxiety symptoms. Study Design: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 32 patients diagnosed with oral leukoplakia. Sociodemographic, clinicopathological, and biobehavioral data were collected from medical records. Plasma concentrations of L-DOPA and dopamine were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-ED). Anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI).
Results: The mean plasma concentrations were 147.1 pg/mL for L-DOPA and 68.92 pg/mL for dopamine. Pearsons correlation analysis revealed no significant association between L-DOPA and dopamine levels (p > 0.05). Specific anxiety symptoms, including "fear of the worst happening" (p = 0.009), "tachycardia" (p = 0.031), and "nervousness" (p = 0.037), were significantly associated with elevated dopamine concentrations. Multivariate analysis identified "fear of the worst happening" as the only independent predictor of higher dopamine levels (β = -13.2, p = 0.009). Conclusion: These findings demonstrate an association between specific anxiety symptoms and increased systemic dopamine levels in patients with oral leukoplakia, suggesting a potential neurobiological link between psychological stress and dopaminergic activity in this population.
