Resumo: Objective: This study aimed to examine the impact of sociodemographic, biobehavioral, clinicopathological, and psychological factors on smoking cessation following treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC). Study design: Seventy-one active smokers with HNC who had completed cancer treatment at least 12 months prior were included in the study. Sociodemographic, clinicopathological, and biobehavioral data were extracted from medical records, while detailed smoking history was obtained via semi-structured interviews. Anxiety and depressive symptoms were evaluated before treatment initiation using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), respectively. Results: Logistic regression analysis revealed that tumor location in the oral cavity (β = 6.891, P = 0.008) and pretreatment sadness (assessed by BDI) (P = 0.023) were significant predictors of continued smoking 12 months post-treatment. Pretreatment feelings of failure emerged as the sole predictor of smoking persistence both immediately after treatment ( < 0.001) and at the 12-month follow-up (P = 0.043). Conclusion: These findings highlight the influence of psychological state on smoking cessation outcomes in HNC patients. The study underscores the potential benefits of integrating psychotherapeutic interventions into HNC treatment protocols to improve smoking cessation rates and, consequently, treatment success.
