Resumo: Objective: This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of acute apical abscesses (AAA) in patients who have undergone chemotherapy to identify the risk factors associated with this occurrence.Study Design: A retrospective observational study was conducted. Data was collected from the Tasy®️ and the Cliniview®️ Systems. Included patients developed AAA during chemotherapy and were over 18 years of age. Exclusion criteria included edentulous patients. Results: Sixteen AAA cases were identified, with 81.3% female and a mean age of 54 years. Hematologic malignancies were found in 33.3% and solid tumors in 66.7%. Most patients (91.7%) had T4-stage tumors, 31.3% had cardiopathies, and 12.5% had diabetes. Patients were treated with Paclitaxel (33.3%), Methotrexate (25%), Cisplatin (25%), and Cytarabine (16.7%). Seventy-five percent of the cases occurred within the first four cycles. Posterior teeth were predominantly affected (80%), and 50% presented periapical lesions with an average size of < 5mm. Endodontic treatment was performed without complications, with the sequence of chemotherapy planning. Conclusion: The study underscores the prevalence of AAA in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Prevention and treatment of endodontic diseases are essential to mitigate complications and improve oral health outcomes during cancer therapy.
