Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the degree of radiation-induced oral mucositis and the clinical-pathological aspects of patients during treatment for head and neck cancer. Study design: Patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer who underwent radiotherapy were recruited. The patients were clinically evaluated and answered a questionnaire verbally. Oral mucositis was classified according to the World Health Organization and analyzed by onset and worst degree. Results: Fifty patients were included, 78% were male. Chemotherapy was significantly associated with patients who presented oral mucositis lesions up to the tenth radiotherapy session (P= .034). Diabetes (P= .017) and radiation dermatitis (P= .017) were significantly associated with severe mucositis at the time of onset. Hypertension (P= .030), diabetes (P= .016), mild and moderate alcoholism (P= .029), radiation dermatitis (P= .001), odynophagia (P= .022), burning mouth (P= .003), difficulty with hygiene (P= .020) and use of opioids (P= .045) were associated significantly with the most severe degree of the lesions. Severe smoking was significantly associated with a higher occurrence of mucositis lesions in the lip region in both periods. Conclusion: The interaction of clinical-pathological, demographic and bio-behavioral characteristics shows different behaviors depending on the stage of oral mucositis.
