Resumo: Objective: The aim of the study was to assess salivary cortisol levels, anxiety, depression, pain and the presence of radiation-induced oral mucositis among patients with head and neck cancer. Study design: The patients were followed up before the start radiotherapy (T0), throughout radiotherapy sessions (T5, T15, T25, T30) and 30 days after the treatment (PT). Symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale questionnaire. Salivary cortisol levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Mucositis was classified according to the World Health Organization and pain according to the Visual Analog Scale. Results: The sample consisted of 12 male patients with a mean age of 63.6 years. Salivary cortisol levels significantly increased at T15 (P= 0.0003), T25 (P=<0.0001) and T30 (P=<0.0001) compared to the baseline (T0). Anxiety and depression symptoms did not show significant differences. The pain associated with mucositis significantly increased during the treatment. At baseline (T0), no pain was observed. However, the pain increased significantly at T15 (2.27±2.41) (P = .0196) and T25 (3.0±3.31) (P = .0116). Conclusion: A significant increase was observed in the severity of radiation-induced oral mucositis, pain and salivary cortisol levels.
