Resumo: Objective: To compare changes in salivary pH, calcium, and phosphorus among users of hookah, cigarette, hookah combined with cigarette, and non-users. Materials and Methods: A case-control study was conducted with 84 participants, divided into four groups: hookah users (n=10), cigarette smokers (n=22), hookah plus cigarette users (n=15), and a control group of non-users (n=37). Saliva was collected, with pH measured using a digital pH meter, and calcium and phosphorus concentrations determined by colorimetric methods. The Kruskal-Wallis test and pairwise comparisons were applied, with a significance level set at 5%. Results: The highest pH value was observed in the hookah group (mean ± standard deviation: 7.81 ± 0.18), which was significantly higher than both the control (7.01 ± 0.11) and cigarette groups (7.09 ± 0.23). The lowest mean calcium concentration was found in the cigarette group (8.45 ± 0.52), compared to the control (10.06 ± 0.38) and hookah plus cigarette groups (10.41 ± 0.50). The lowest mean phosphorus concentration was also observed in the cigarette group (11.57 ± 1.28), in comparison to the hookah plus cigarette (17.87 ± 1.63) and control groups (16.76 ± 1.02). Conclusion: The use of hookah or cigarettes led to alterations in salivary pH, calcium, and phosphorus in the studied sample. These changes may affect salivary homeostasis and potentially have implications for oral health.
