Resumo: The histological alterations seen in minor salivary glands from Sjögren´s syndrome (SS) have been already described, but their differences to unspecific chronic sialadenitis are not completely characterized. Objective: to analyze the histological features in minor salivary glands obtained for SS diagnosis. Study design: one hundred HE-stained histological slides from labial minor salivary glands obtained for SS diagnosis were analyzed. A comparison was performed among three groups (SS, unspecific chronic sialadenitis, and non-inflammed minor salivary glands). Results: final sample was composed by 97 females, and mean age of the patients was 54,9 years old. Twenty-two cases (22%) were diagnosed as SS, 51% as unspecific chronic sialadenitis, and 27% as non-inflammed minor salivary glands. There were no differences on the presence of ductal dilatation and acinar atrophy among the three groups, but fat substitution was more common in SS (p = 0,002). Mean number of lymphocytic foci was higher in SS in comparison to the other two groups (p = 0,0001). Conclusion: apart from the mean number of lymphocytic foci, fat substitution was more common in minor salivary glands from SS patients in comparison to unspecific chronic sialadenitis and non-inflammed minor salivary glands.
