Resumo: Paracoccidioidomycosis is a deep fungal infection caused by the organism Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The condition is more frequently observed in South and Central America. Within certain endemic areas, Dasypus novemcinctus (nine-banded armadillo) serves as the host for the microorganism P. brasiliensis. The disease shows a marked male predominance, with a typical male-to-female ratio of 15:1. This striking difference is believed to be due to a protective effect of female hormones (as β-estradiol inhibits the transformation of the organisms mycelial form into the pathogenic yeast form). It generally affects middle-aged patients living in rural areas. Oral lesions are commonly observed and appear as mulberry-like ulcerations that most often affect the alveolar mucosa, gingiva, and palate.CLINICAL CASE: The patient is a smoker who lived in a rural area until adolescence. Reports weight loss, positive lymphadenopathy, and dysphagia. An incisional biopsy was performed.
