Resumo: This study aims to review the existing literature on the relationship between microplastics
and oral cancer. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed and SciELO databases
using the keywords "microplastics" and "oral cancer." The understanding of the association
between microplastics and oral cancer (OC) is still emerging; however, some evidence
suggests that prolonged exposure to microplastics may cause damage to oral tissues,
chronic irritation, and even genotoxic alterations due to the chemical additives present in
microplastics. These effects could trigger immunological changes that may contribute to
cancer development. Although scientific evidence remains limited, the presence of chemical
substances associated with microplastics has also been linked to an increased risk of DNA
damage, which may play a role in the development of OC. Thus, microplastics represent a
potential risk factor due to their ability to induce chronic tissue irritation, DNA damage, and
immune system dysfunction.
