Resumo: Drug-induced mucositis is a condition characterized by redness and painful ulceration of the non-keratinized mucosa. An 83-year-old patient, uncooperative during clinical examination, complained of extensive and painful labial lesions lasting 50 days. The lesions mainly affected the vermillion of the lower lip and appeared as a whitish mucoid plaque with purulent crusts. An incisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia, but the microscopic analysis was inconclusive. During the reevaluation of the case, the patient reported using continuing topical ointments composed of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), prescribed by a dermatologist two months earlier to treat a previous lesion on the lower lip, not aforementioned by the patient. The 5-FU ointment was discontinued, and the patient showed significant healing of the labial lesions, confirming the diagnosis of drug-induced mucositis. This study highlights the importance of clinical follow-up, showing that proper monitoring is essential to avoid adverse reactions to treatment.
