Título: DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS BETWEEN LAUGIER-HUNZIKER SYNDROME AND PEUTZ-JEGHERS SYNDROME: RARE CASE REPORT

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de caso clínico (PCC)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: A 42-year-old woman sought care due to dark pigmented macules on the buccal and labial mucosa, tongue, gingiva, fingers, and melanonychia on the middle finger of her right hand. She reported onset of the lesions after a dengue infection, during which she received intravenous iron supplementation. Referred by the hematology team, she had a medical history of COVID-19 treated with hydroxychloroquine, anemia, thrombocytopenia, mild neutropenia, and two spontaneous abortions. An incisional biopsy revealed melanin hyperpigmentation in the basal epithelial layer with melanophages. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy ruled out Peutz-Jeghers syndrome-associated with gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps and increased cancer risk-and confirmed the diagnosis of Laugier-Hunziker syndrome, a benign condition requiring periodic monitoring. This case highlights the importance of differential diagnosis between these syndromes due to their distinct prognoses. The dental surgeon plays a key role in recognizing mouth pigmentary lesions and guiding appropriate referral and investigation, avoiding unnecessary interventions in benign conditions.
