Título: SOCIAL MEDIA'S INFLUENCE ON THE CHOICE OF DENTIST AND DIFFERENT TYPES OF DENTAL TREATMENT

Nome do Apresentador: Laura Cascão LOPES

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Áreas afins no caráter multidisciplinar

Resumo: Objectives: To evaluate, from the patients' perspective, the influence of social media (SM) on choosing a dentist and accepting the dental treatment (DT) proposed.
Study Design: This cross-sectional study used a 17-item online questionnaire divided into four sections. Inclusion criteria were individuals over 18 years old, who had been treated or sought DT, and had active SM accounts. Data collection was conducted through Google Forms® using the snowball sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, and effect sizes (ES) were classified as small, moderate, or large.
Results: Among the 206 participants, 148 were women (71.8%) and 58 men (28.2%), with a mean age of 37.3 ± 15.0 years. The most used SM platforms were WhatsApp® (95.1%), Instagram® (92.2%), YouTubeTM® (56.8%), and Facebook® (30.1%). Significant differences in dentist choice and DT acceptance were observed among women aged ≤36, single, and without higher education (p < 0.001). Instagram® was most influential in professional choice and DT modality, while WhatsApp® and YouTubeTM® were less relevant.
Conclusions: SM, especially Instagram®, significantly influences the selection of dentists and acceptance of DT proposals, with effect sizes ranging from moderate to large in significant variables.
