Resumo: Objective: To investigate the antifungal effect of cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAP) combined with vitamin C (Vit C) in oral candidiasis. Study design: Twenty-one male mice were immunosuppressed with methylprednisolone and inoculated with Candida albicans for induction of oral candidiasis. The animals were divided into control, nystatin, CAP and CAP + Vit C groups. Treatments were administrated on the 8th and 9th experimental days. The animals were exposed to CAP for 5 minutes, followed or not by intramucosal injection of Vitamin C. Clinical evaluations were conducted on days 8 and 10. On day 10, the animals were euthanized, and tongues were processed for histological analysis. Results: Clinical scores indicated reduced signs of candidiasis in all treated groups in comparison to the control (p<0.05). Histologically, decreased areas of C. albicans hyphae and yeasts were quantified in the nystatin group followed by CAP+ VIT C and CAP, when compared to the control group (p<0.05). A trend toward reduced hyperplasia, hyperkeratosis and exocytosis was observed in the epithelium of the treated groups while the connective tissue showed decreased inflammatory infiltrate. Conclusion: CAP is a promising alternative approach for oral candidiasis and its combination with vitamin C appears to potentiate its antifungal effect.
