Resumo: AbstractObjective: To evaluate the influence of sociodemographic, pathological, and clinical variables on the delay in oral cancer treatment.Study Design: This cohort study included 129 patients referred to a cancer hospital by oral diagnosis specialists between 1998 and 2022. Sociodemographic, clinical, and pathological data including sex, age, habits, metropolitan or non-metropolitan cities, marital status, affected anatomical site, pain, T-stage at the first consultation, and skin color were collected. Total delay was defined as the time between the estimated onset of symptoms and the anatomopathological exam result, while patient delay was calculated from the first reported symptom to the first consultation. Logistic regression models were constructed based on the categorization into shorter and longer delays. Odds ratios were calculated, and a p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The total diagnostic delay was approximately 19.57 weeks (IQR: 39.11). None of the variables influenced the total diagnostic delay. The patient delay was approximately 17,57 (IQR: 40) weeks. The logistic regression analysis indicated that skin color (brown/black) was associated with an increased risk of a patient delay exceeding 17,57 weeks [OR: 3,475 (1,375-8,781)].Conclusion: Nonwhite patients with oral cancer experience significantly longer delays in seeking a diagnosis compared to white patients.
