Título: Local evaluation of photodynamic therapy effectiveness in osteonecrosis treatment in a murine model

Nome do Apresentador: Maria SOUSA

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Objective: This study evaluates the antimicrobial and biomodulatory effects of
antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on experimental bisphosphonaterelated osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) in rats, based on morphological
changes. Study Design: Thirty 60-week-old female Wistar rats from the Institute
for Research in Drugs and Medicines (IpeFarM) were divided into five groups:
negative control, positive control, ONE+PS, ONE+PDT, and ONE+aPDT. Some
received zoledronic acid, while others received only saline. After periodic drug
administration, the left first lower molars were extracted. aPDT was applied to
specific groups, and the animals were later euthanized. Histological and
immunohistochemical analyses were performed on decalcified hemimandibles,
and bone density was assessed using micro-computed tomography. Results:
The positive control group exhibited intense inflammation, severe tissue
disorganization, and necrosis, indicating diffuse osteonecrosis. In the ONE+LTP
group, inflammation was mild, with moderate fibroblast proliferation, collagen
deposition, and focal necrosis. Conclusion: Understanding BRONJ
pathophysiology, combined with aPDT, highlights its biostimulatory effects on
bone and soft tissue repair in experimental osteonecrosis.
