Área Temática: Patologia Oral

Resumo: Introduction: Risk factors for head and neck cancer include lifestyle habits, environmental factors, and socioeconomic conditions, with social capital emerging as a key element in the social determinants of health model proposed by the World Health Organization. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between social capital and the quality of life of head and neck cancer survivors. Study Design: The study included survivors aged 18 years or older who had completed oncological treatment at least three months prior and had responded to assessments of social capital and the University of Washington Quality of Life questionnaire (UW-QoL). Results: Data were collected from 59 participants (83.1% men, 16.9% women), with a mean age of 64.49 years (SD ± 8.34). Preliminary findings showed that higher social capital was associated with better UW-QoL scores in the activity (p = 0.020) and mood (p = 0.027) domains. Conclusions: Greater social capital was associated with improved quality of life in head and neck cancer survivors. Strengthening social ties, participating in groups, and fostering community cohesion may offer emotional support and encourage daily activities, enhancing social well-being. Future research will include a larger sample and multivariate analysis to validate these associations.
