Resumo: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) results in mineral and bone disorder (MBD). This, in turn, can manifest through changes in bone mineral density as well as the presence of extraskeletal calcifications (ESC). Objective: The aim of this study is to identify the prevalence of ESC in panoramic radiographs (PR) of patients with CKD. Study design: This is a retrospective study evaluating digital PR of adult patients with CKD, conducted by two trained and calibrated evaluators (Kappa 0.864), with a third evaluator consulted in case of disagreement. Results: A total of 358 PR of patients with CKD were evaluated, with a mean age of 50 years, and the majority were male (n=181; 50%). Of these, 148 (41.3%) were in stage 3, 49 (13.6%) in stage 4, and 106 (29.6%) in stage 5. Carotid calcifications were present in 98 patients (27.3%), Monckeberg calcification in 26 patients (7.2%), and styloid calcification in 273 patients (76.2%). A total of 296 (82.6%) patients presented at least one type of image indicating ESC. Conclusion: The results of this pilot study indicate a high prevalence of ESC, with a greater prevalence in patients with more advanced stages of CKD.This study was financed in part by CAPES.
