Título: SECONDARY SYPHILIS IN THE ORAL CAVITY: CLINICAL CASE REPORT

Resumo: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection with many new cases worldwide. Female
patient, 30 years old, leucoderma, complained of "throat irritation" for 7 months. She sought
other professionals and the hypothesis was "thrush". There was worsening in the burning
symptoms that extended to the tongue and palate, with difficulty swallowing. The intraoral
examination showed erythematous spots with ulcerated areas of whitish bed, painful in the
soft palate and oropharynx. The diagnostic hypotheses were aphthous ulcerations,
candidosis and syphilis. It was prescribed mouthwash, topical antifungal and laboratory tests
were requested. Patient returned without improvement and awaited the result which were
reactive for syphilis, she was referred to an infectious disease specialist who prescribed
Penicillin G-benzatine. There was regression of the lesions and symptoms. She will return
for follow-up. It is important for healthcare professionals to be aware of injuries that may
mimic others, requesting specific tests for correct diagnosis.
