Resumo: A sexually transmitted infection, a chronic, systemic, infectious disease of an endemic nature, which can reach epidemic proportions. Its etiological agent is the bacterium Treponema Pallidum, identified for the first time in 1905 by Fritz Richard Schaudinn.Named by Sir William Osler as the "great imitator". There are several theories and discussions about its origin, ranging from Christopher Columbus to Charles VIII. We seek to bring a historical reflection on the impact of syphilis on individuals throughout the centuries, showing its influence on painting, literature and cinema, together with its social, religious, scientific and political impact. Among those who contracted the disease are the sculptor Bevenuto Cellini, the painters Paul Gauguin, Édouard Manet and Toulouse Lautrec, and the musicians Schubert, Schumann and Paganini. In painting, we have Monfa with the painting "The Medical Inspection in the Brothel", Goya who painted "Las Viejas", Munch with the painting "Herança". Among the various cinematographic works, we highlight the films "Los Borgia" by António Hernandez, "Alatriste" by Augusto Dias, "Dracula de Bram Stoker" by Francis Ford Coppola and Miss Evers Boys, by Joseph Sargent.
