Resumo: Understanding the prevalence of cysts of the maxillofacial region in oral pathology services is essential to ensure representativeness of the sample population when research with such samples are designed. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of odontogenic and non-odontogenic cysts diagnosed at an oral pathology service. The search strategy included mainly the word cyst and derivates. The output was organized by diagnosis, age, sex, and location. 52.8% were female, 46.8% male, and 0.4% had no information on sex. The mean age was 36.3 years (1-98). 10% were over 60 years. 42.5% were in the mandible, and 33.5% were recorded in the maxilla. The most prevalent diagnoses were periapcial cyst (31.9%), dentigerous cyst (15.4%) and odontogenic keratocyst (15.1%). The findings corroborate those found in other studies worldwide, with few variations in relation to age, gender, and preferred location.
