Resumo: Introduction:
Indigenous community membership has been discussed as a determinant of oral health, but few studies have been conducted.
Objective:
To evaluate the determinants and self-perception of oral health in an indigenous community using a mixed quantitative-qualitative study.
Methodology:
The study was conducted in two phases: quantitative, with clinical examination and application of questionnaires; and qualitative, with interviews with a group of participants in the quantitative research.
Results:
Women show indicators of greater accumulated oral damage, but less self-reported interference with social activity compared to men. Higher prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders among urban residents, but worse self-perception of quality of life in rural settings. Strong association between educational level and oral health status. Belonging to an indigenous people can be a determinant of oral health, evidenced by the greater need for oral rehabilitation and family history of cancer, as well as barriers to access to dental care. A need for information about oral cancer was also observed.
Conclusion:
Gender, rural residence, educational level, and ethnicity influence oral health. The community has limited knowledge about oral cancer. It is necessary to implement strategies for oral health promotion and prevention of oral diseases, considering their culture, language, and specific needs.
