Resumo: Objective: To investigate the efficacy of topical clonazepam on pain and burning relief in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS).
Study design: Fourteen patients over 18 years old, diagnosed with BMS, were included in this triple-blind randomized controlled clinical trial to compare topical clonazepam (2,5mg/ml),(n=7) with placebo (n=7). The patients were instructed to use treatment thrice daily for 21 days. After that, treatments were interrupted to evaluate the effectiveness and/or recurrence of symptoms for 35 days. A researcher collected data of interest at three time points: T1 (baseline), T2 (21 days), and T3 (56 days). The primary outcome was changes in pain experience using a visual analog scale (VAS) and McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ).
Results: There were significant intra-group reductions in VAS and MPQ in both T1 and T3 groups. In inter-group analysis, the Clorazepam group significantly reduced pain scores on the MPQ from T1 to T2 compared to the control group (p=0.007); however, this difference was not maintained from T1 to T3 (p=0.110).
Conclusion: This study suggests that topical administration of clonazepam may relieve BMS symptoms. These findings should be interpreted with caution due to the sample size. More conclusive results will be available after trial completion.
