Resumo: Aim: to assess the expression of SARS-CoV-2 entry factors ACE2, TMPRSS2 and FURIN in salivary glands from Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in comparison to normal salivary glands (NSG). Methods: Twenty-five formalin-fixed paraffin embedded samples were obtained, consisting of 15 SS, and 10 NSG. RNA extraction and RT-qPCR were performed to assess the gene expression of ACE2, TMPRSS2 and FURIN. Results: ACE2 mRNA was overexpressed in SS compared with NSG (p<0.05). No significant difference was observed in the levels of expression of TMPRSS2 and FURIN between SS and NSG (p<0.05). A positive correlation was seen between TMPRSS2 and FURIN expression in SS (r=0.768; p<0.05). Conclusion: SARS-CoV-2 cellular entry factors are expressed in salivary glands. Our analysis revealed high expression of ACE2 in SS. The inflammatory environment of salivary glands in SS might influence the imbalance of ACE2 expression in the tissue explored.
